Converting a House into Flats: any idea what I have to do?

Postby adminSPF on 02 Mar 2009, 16:34

Hi everyone!

I'm about to convert a house into a number of flats on different floors I've been told that I'll have to have a 'Part E' sound test. I've never done this before and was wondering what the best way to pass this test would be. What happens if you fail the test? And how much is the test and other stuff going to cost me?

Yours hopefully,

Hi. Try this website: londonnsoundproofing.co.uk. There is a link on the home page to the building regulations for soundproofing. You will have to install ceiling soundproofing. The airborne noise is not a huge problem but impact can be. In most cases you will have to install a soundproof ceiling with a product called Impactlay on the floor above. The testing must be done through a company that is registered, but make sure what affiliation your council requires as there are a few. This normally cost about +/- 800 pound for testing and about 130 pound per sqm meter to do the installation. (labour, material and VAT)
