2-Disk Xwindow embedded Linux Development virtual machine

A development environment for very efficient Linux/xwindows distributions, implementing a net centric operating environment and user friendly GUI:

latest version soundproofing-development default development machine January 15th 2009 http://natld.berlios.de/1diskxwin-soundproofing-dev.tar.bz2

Background and overview

The mungkie linux system has been around for 14 years, although very little work has been done on the system in recent years occasional requests and enquirys have been received regarding compilation problems. Due to the many various versions of linux available we have at long last decided to make available a system to allow interested developers simple access to a standardised development environment that will compile the mungkie embedded system.

In order to give the maximum access the the devel system we decided upon a virtual machine image as this allows developers access from "virtually" all available environments. The beauty of virtual machines is that we can provide a fairly standard machine removing the need to provide drivers for every possible machine. The image should run on vmware and qemu virtual machines. The idea of easy access to the system have been extended to smb file sharing (as this seems to be the easiest way to share files with the largest number of systems), allowing the use of the host environment to edit and manage the source code while the devel environment handles the compilation.

We have tried to keep to the same philosophy as the mungkie/unix system (keep it small and simple), but unfortunatly there is insufficient time and reason to create a really small devel system. The system aims to stay below 40Mb for the dev environment and source code.

Installation Overview

This is the development environment for producing mungkies tiny embedded X window system environment. It is hoped the system will just extract and run using vmware(the system has been tested on vmwareplayer running on MS windows XP/Vista, and centos), if you have any problems please fix them and send us a patch.

The files distributed are VMware config files (you are strongly advised to use vmwareplayer to run the system as it is more stable faster and easier to use!)..........

But for those that don't want to use non open source software we have provided simple scripts to run the system using qemu and openvpn(you may have to install qemu and openvpn for correct operation). This has been vaguely tested and runs most of the time but networking support may need some further configuration (do not ask us about this, we have no idea)

To run using qemu under MS windows simply run the "mungdev.bat" file and install the openvpn software.

The system should create an image file in the directory \\mungdev\mungkie\1diskxwin-soundproofing\build\1diskx.img

It should also write the image to the virtual floppy disk image on the host machine (you may have to connect to the file 1diskx.img using vmware in the host). Once you have written the image you can run the 1diskx.vmx image file in vmware to test your system........
