Floor Height Gain | Labour intensity | Overall acoustic performance | Typical Airborne uplift | Typical Impact uplift | Materials cost per metre | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Solution 1: Acoustic mineral wool and SBM5 acoustic layer a reasonable cost comprehensive under floor noise treatment | 0mm | Medium | Excellent noise airborne noise attenuation | 23db | 9db | Medium |
Solution 2: Acoustic mineral wool and acoustic plasterboard A good choice for treating airborne noise from below | 0mm | High | Excellent for stopping airborne sound rising, and where impact is not a concern | 19db | 5db | Low |
Solution 3: Effective Budget Solution | 0mm | Low | For those not wanting to lift all floor boards this gives a decent result. Where access to the under floor is restricted this solution will offer some acoustic improvement to your floor. | 13db | 3db | Low- budget solution |
Solution 4: Under Floor Hangers retaining original floor boards Impact Sound - Under Floor Hanger Designed to keep original floorboards, deal with impact as well as airborne sound, this solution has only a 7mm rise is the height of the floor. | 7mm | High | Where impact sound is a problem and retention of original floorboards must be done this is the best choice. | 18db | 19db | High |
Solution 5: Acoustic Joist Strips Replacing Floor Boards Impact Sound - Acoustic Joist strips If you are keen to reduce the impact sound you are suffering but are also replacing your flooring surface ( to perhaps a chipboard surface) the acoustic cradle system is a more economical method of reducing impact sound. | 17mm | Med/High | An excellent option where you can replace your floor boards with T&G Flooring | 19db | 18db | Medium |

Solution 6: Acoustic plasterboards
Sealed boards and plasterboard
Here plasterboards are added above the floorboards, this is a less labour intensive job than lifting
the floorboards to lay between the joists but raises the floor height by about 28mm.
|
25-35mm | Low | An excellent budget system for reducing sound transmission. | 10db | 4db | Low |
Solution 7: Acoustic plasterboards with mineral wool |
25-35mm | Medium | Better for airborne sound reduction than Solution 6 | 16db | 6db | Low/Medium |
Solution 8:
Acoustic APB with impact absorbing mat
The incorporation of a SBM5 mat will attenuate and reduce impact sound to the plasterboard solution.
|
34mm | Low | A great choice when impact and airborne sound is a problem | 11db | 18db | Medium |
Solution 9: Acoustic APB with impact absorbing SBM5 mat and AMW100 mineral wool |
34mm | Medium | 17db | 19db | Medium | |
Solution 10: Impact sound absorbing mat Impact sound reducing mats are an excellent method of solving foot fall and other impact noise problems. |
6mm / 9mm | Low | If you have complaints of impact sound suffered by your neighbour this is a good choice | 4db | 16-20db | Low/Medium |

Solution 11: Acoustic mineral wool and acoustic membrane. The most comprehensive under floor treatment | 40mm | Medium | Excellent noise airborne noise attenuation | 70 RwdB | 46 LnwdB | Medium |
Solution 12: Acoustic mineral wool and acoustic plasterboard Acoustic mineral wool and acoustic plasterboard Requires access to ceiling below. This is a good choice for treating airborne noise from below | 0mm | High | Excellent for stopping airborne sound rising, and where impact is a concern | 63 RwdB | 56 LnwdB | Low |
Solution 13: Effective Budget Solution | 0mm | Low | For those not wanting to lift all floor boards this gives a decent result Effective Budget Solution Where access to the under floor is restricted this solution will offer a significant acoustic improvement to your floor. | 13db | 3db | Low- budget solution |
Solution 14: Under Floor Hangers retaining original floor boards | 7mm | High | Where your impact sound is a problem and you wish to retain floorboards this is an excellent choice. | 18db | 19db | High |
